Describe an example from your life of when you were taught using each method described in this article: behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism.
Throughout my life I have witnessed several different learning methods and noticed the ways they have impacted me and the way I learn. Behaviourism, cognitivism, and constructivism are all unique ways to learn and depending on the lesson being taught can be used interchangeably. After reading up on these methods I noticed that many people in my life taught me in all of these methods.
For example my football coach was certainly a behaviourists in the way he chose to teach us lessons. He consistently gave me tasks and drills to perform and then immediately offered feedback on how I could do better. He would them teach me how to transfer that newly learned skill onto the field. I took well to this style of learning as it allowed me to assess my skills and then learn how I could improve upon them almost immediately after. This helped me improve my skills as quickly as possible, which is why I thoroughly enjoy learning from behaviourists.
The approach that cognitivists use to teach their learners reminds me of the strategies that my tutor applied towards me. My tutors main focus was to help me use learning strategies to better understand the material I was being taught. After helping me develop learning strategies that helped me understand the concept she would then teach me how to connect the new material to older material. This helped me understand concepts by stitching together chapters in order to understand the whole unit. This method helped me learn more effectively and is something I still apply today.
Constructivists have a very unique way of teaching and I struggled to think of an example of a constructivists teacher in my life. I realized that this method was used to teach me life lessons by my parents. They would constantly put me into real world situations and would watch so see how I chose to solve them. They knew that the best way to teach me things was by allowing me to experience them. Through these experiences I learned to reflect on my actions and learned how I could improve my actions the next time. I enjoyed this method of learning that my parens used on me as it allowed me to learn on my own and teach myself life lessons based on my beliefs.
